Plumbing Problems

One of the most frequent complaints in regards to a home is a plumbing problem. Anytime a person mentions that they have a plumbing problem the first thing that comes to mind is a hefty plumber bill and even more money budgeted for home repairs. Depending on the type of issue you are dealing with, the solution can be quite simple.

A leaky faucet for example. This is probably one of the most common household problems anywhere in the world. A leaky faucet can range from an annoying tap in the sink to a sizeable addition to your water bill. That’s why it’s important to train yourself in basic plumbing and learn how to tell the difference between a major or minor problem. Identifying the problem is only half of the battle; you must also be prepared to handle the issue as well.

To quickly handle most household plumbing issues, take your time to learn about the basic structure of the water system in your home. Do you know where the main shut off valve is? Do you even know where your water meter is? More importantly, do you even know what either of these things are?

For starters, examine your plumbing problem from a distance. Does it appear to be leaking badly? Can you see anything physically cracked or broken? After you have assessed the severity of the problem, you have two choices. Give the plumber a call or break out the tool box under the sink. Any problem that involves a major break or a substantial leak requires the immediate attention of a plumber. It’s not worth risking the integrity of your ceiling and floors in your home to save a couple of bucks on a plumbing bill. Having to renovate a floor or ceiling will prove to be more costly than a simple call to the plumber.

Now for those simple leaking faucet problems, you will quickly find that by replacing a washer or by tightening a screw you can eliminate the issue in the majority of cases. There will come times when a complete faucet replacement is necessary, but if you are confident enough to give it a try, it’s really not that difficult. Arm yourself with the tools necessary to complete the job before you ever begin. Having what you need on hand will insure that you can get the job done quickly and correctly.

In the end, if you find that you’ve bitten off more than you can chew, pick up the phone and call in a professional. What began as a simple problem can quickly turn into a fiasco so make sure that you have your local plumber’s name handy by your tool box. A plumber most times actually saves you money in the long run; if you do more damage trying to fix a problem yourself then you’ll still be paying more in the end anyway.

A plumbing problem doesn’t have to be the end all to your day. Just relax and assess the problem and realistically evaluate your abilities to complete the job successfully. It never hurts to try, but can your pocketbook afford you turning a minor problem into something major?
